Spurs eyeing French centre-back

TRANSFER TALK

Recent reports have suggested that both Tottenham Hotspur and the other inferior North London club, Arsenal, are both taking a keen interest in 25-year-old (26 in May) Florian Lejeune.

Lejeune is a former French Under-20 international (7 caps, 1 goal) who plays for Eibar as a defender. He is equally adept at playing as either a defender or a midfielder but plays mostly as a centre-back and is right-footed.

The 1.90 m (6 ft 3 in) tall defender has attracted a lot of interest thanks to his release clause of £8.57 million (€10m - AUS$13.96m - US$10.69m). He joined Eibar from Manchester City, although he was on loan at Genoa for the year he was a City player, for just £1.2 million (€1.4m - AUS$1.96m - US$1.50m) on a four-year contract that runs until 2020.

In 26 games the Istres-born defender has picked up 5 yellow cards and 1 red card in a total of 2,250 minutes of playing time (1 goal, 1 assist).

We could be looking at him as a replacement for Kevin Wimmer, who is likely to leave in the summer, or as a precaution against Toby Alderweireld not signing a new contract. Then again we look at player all the time so we may just be continuing to keep an eye on him.

Istres is a community in southern France, some 60 km northwest of Marseille in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. I thought we'd add a geography lesson in for good measure.
