Tottenham Hotspur Double Winner Cliff Jones

On this day in 1935 Tottenham Hotspur winger Cliff Jones was born. He was widely considered to be the best left-winger in the world at his peak when he won The Double with us in 1961, retained the FA Cup the following year and was part of the first British team to win a major European trophy, the 1963 European Cup Winners Cup. European trophies back then were not considered to be at the vastly different levels they are now.

Today you can find Cliff Jones entertaining supporters on match day where fans can book a table with a Spurs legend for lunch before a game.

On his debut for us in 1958 he came to the ground by public transport and walked through the gates with supporters, a far cry from today. Spurs bought him from Swansea City for £35,000 and in Italian giants Juventus offered us £100,000 for the Welsh international but Bill Nicholson turned it down suggesting Jones was a priceless member of the side.

Happy Birthday Cliff.
