A Harry Kane penalty secured the points for Spurs

It was a good day to be a Spurs fan yesterday. We saw a one-sided encounter against Middlesbrough which poor play in the last third kept to a 1-0 win from the penalty spot.

At the start of the day we were nine points behind Chelsea, but then there was one point separating the next four teams. After Arsenal and Liverpool lost to Chelsea and a resurgent Hull City respectively, we now have a three point gap to Arsenal and a four point gap to Liverpool.

Manchester City play today in the early kick-off at home against Swansea City and have the chance to leap into third place a point behind us. Manchester United are away at relegation threatened Leicester City with a chance to close the gap on Liverpool and Arsenal.

Premier League Table
Position, Team, Played, Goals For, Goals Against, Points, (Goal Difference)
1. Chelsea 24 - 51-27 - 59 (34)
2. SPURS 24 - 46-16 - 50 (30)
3. Arsenal 24 - 52-28 - 47 (24)
4. Liverpool 24 - 52-30 - 46 (22)
5. Man City 23 - 47-28 - 46 (19)
6. Man Utd 23 - 33-21 - 42 (12)

Liverpool are out of form and a win for Manchester United would put them just a point behind them and two behind Arsenal. That puts added pressure on both clubs who would then have to be worried that another slip-up could see them drop out of the top four.

There is a long way to go and how clubs handle the pressure will play a big part in the final table. Looking up and aiming for a club above you can help maintain focus, that will be the mantra a coach instils in players. Some players can maintain that focus better than others, some can channel the pressure into performance better than others.

It was a lesson we had to learn last season, let's hope we can handle the run-in better than we did then. With two very tough games in our last four fixtures, Arsenal and Manchester United, we will be wanting to make sure we have maintained a gap between us and them.

Next up is a big away game against Liverpool.
