SPURS SOUND DEFENCE

Without a defence you win nothing, success is built from the back, but you still need a defensive system to operate and ours clearly works.

Spurs have only conceded one goal in their last six Premier League games at White Hart Lane and only 5 all season. It has helped to make us the best defence in the Premier League, 16 goals conceded all season (24 games).
Number of days since the last defeat.
  • East Fife: 78
  • Exeter City: 77
  • Celtic: 75
  • Hibernian: 65
  • Forfar Athletic: 57
  • Tottenham Hotspur: 56

Spurs are unbeaten in the last 9 Premier League games, and 11 games in all. If we want to win trophies then it is these type of runs we need to go on. Fans were complaining earlier in the season because we were unbeaten, we weren't winning enough games, but now they are seeing why that unbeaten run was important. Now they are starting to understand that solidity at the back then enables the creative players to play.

A team whose forwards can't rely on their defence every time they score a goal and always fighting a battle with the odds stacked against them. A sound defence puts the odds in your favour and maximises the value of each goal. Before if Spurs scored one you were never comfortable, you always felt we were going to concede so we'll have to score at least two. We have had four 1-0 wins this season, last season we had a total of three in all competitions.

Last season we had a fairly constant defence, this season it has been change all the time. Mousa Dembele was missing from the start, he helps form a shield in front of the defence, Hugo Lloris was injured and Michel Vorm was playing in August. Danny Rose is injured, Jan Vertonghen is injured, Toby Alderweireld has been injured, Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama were a centre-back pairing at one point against Manchester City and didn't concede a goal.

It demonstrates how well drilled the players are in the system. Changing the defensive personnel, while it has an effect, still enables to remain a solid unit. We will need that solidity against Liverpool at Anfield next weekend.
  • Spurs have won 10 of the 12 home games this season, drawing the other 2.
