Daft Aston Villa fans

Do younger football supporters know their history? During the FA Cup tie, the daft Aston Villa away fans were singing 'Champions of Europe, you'll never sing that' to the Tottenham Hotspur fans.

If they knew anything about football they would know that Tottenham Hotspur were the first British club to lift a major European trophy! Oh how embarrassing.

The FA Cup Fourth Round draw has been made and Spurs have been drawn at home against Wycombe Wanderers after being the first team drawn by former Liverpool and England striker Michael Owen.

There are 16 ties in this round, then 8, 4, 2 and the Final. Six games to win a trophy, one game won, five to go.

  1. Cup Winner's Cup is hardly the European Cup, and it is also obsolete.

    1. At the time it was a major European trophy with a far higher regard than the Europa League has now. The values then were not the values now, which of course have to be respected.

  2. To be fair, winning the second tier European trophy does not make a team the champions of Europe. The champions of Europe is the top European competion, aka the Champions League/European Cup, not the UEFA Cup/Europa League. Villa won the European Cup, where you actually had to be the champions of your own league to qualify.

    1. To be fair, again you are not perceiving things as they were then, only as they are now. They were not considered as first and second tier trophies at the time.

    2. So does winning the cwc make you champions of Europe??.....or not?? Yes or no??

  3. Hopefully we WILL sing when we're champions of Europe, and hopefully Poch can lead us to the promised land. But taking nothing away from our feat of being the first British club to win a major European competition, and the first to win TWO different major European comps., the Villa fans were half right! We have never been champions of Europe, as they were in 1981, but we could be one day! So it's not that embarrassing and the writer of this blog should well know that. Having said that ..most football fans these days (under 40 at any rate) seem to know nothing of football history. A bit like in schools, where history only goes back to the early 20C, so young fans only know PL history from the early 90s on. Compare this with the USA where most baseball and football fans KNOW their history ..right back to the late 19C!! As shown among fans when the Cubs won the World Series in an exciting contest against the Indians last year ..the Cubs winning it previously in 1908, and the Indians in 1948.

    1. Their were no first and second tier European competitions in the 60's, apart from the anglo-Italian Cup! I do take the point but both competitions made teams the champions of Europe at the time.

  7. Quite an embarrassing article as Tottenham have never been champions of Europe. Only Villa, Forest, Liverpool, Man United & Chelsea can make that claim. Looks like they know their history better than you !

    1. Looks like you don't understand the changing face of European football and how trophies have been seen in different eras.

    2. Those two trophies were miles apart back in the sixties, its a giraffe you're having.

That's why no-one remembers (or cares) that tossers like you and Newcastle won these secondary, made-in-the-image-of tinpot tournaments

  10. We've got the best stadium in Europe rising up, a great team and, very soon the finances to be up there with the best. I'm afraid that we aint going away. You're gonna have to get used to Spurs being amongst Europe's elite. The great thing this is...... you know it too.

  11. As someone who watched his first Villa game in 1956 I can assure you that there was most definitely a differentiation between the European Cup and the European Cup Winners Cup hence the excitement when Celtic became the first British team to win the European Cup. In fact in some seasons the team entered by some counties was not even the Cup winner as when "doing the double" teams chose to enter the European Cup.

  13. Villa fans singing "Champions of Europe, you'll never sing that" is nothing more than banter.
We can't know absolutely for sure that will always be the case. If Spurs continue with the progress they've made recently then it may become a realistic possibility.
Trying to call us daft for singing it shows it had the desired effect, you rose to the bait and trying to justify winning the cup winners as being on par to winning European Cup, as great an achievement it was, is daft. Winners of European Cup Winners Cup have never been able to claim to be Champions of Europe.
A better response from Tottenham supporters would have been to give a bit back on Sunday, take the piss at our current predicament, good old fashioned banter. We would have took it on the chin, instead we were left to sing on our own and create some atmosphere. UTV

  14. Dont forget we followed thus up and proved the point by winning the Super Cup against a little team with Johan Cryuff playing if I remember, now who could that be?

  15. I've always quite liked Villa and have a few Villa fans following me on twitter they've always been a decent club first time i saw them I think was about 1965 at WHL we were beating them 5-1 at half time Tony Hately stepped up and scored 4 headers in the second half to equalise 5-5 he also headed one in the first half 5 headers his easiest chance stroking it in the net from 12 yard was cleared off the line by Alan Mullery they nearly won 5-6 so its a shame to see them in the 2nd division I hope they come back up but thats exactly the reason the Spurs crowd were quite until we scored this match didnt mean anything to us and it shows how far Villa have fallen.

  17. I think this is one of those rare occasions when i don't go along with Clive. Although the difference was nowhere near what it is now, the European Cup was always the senior competition as far as I recall. We've not won that one or its successor yet.

It's good for Villa that they can chant that. Were I in their position I'd relish the chance.

Yes, we were first British team to win a major European trophy. We were the only club to win the FA Cup as a non-league side, showing a Wimbledon-esque ability to punch above our weight even back then before we won the old First Division back in 50-51 the year after promotion. We were first to do the double in the 20th century, back when it really meant something and the division was full of teams all playing at a similar level.

We have a great history to be very proud of. Let's not begrudge the Villans singing of theirs now they're a way away from such giddy heights. Even if it is to taunt us.
