Wanted by Roma Vertonghen is ahead of schedule

Vertonghen is ahead of schedule

As you can see the lads are training hard while the boss is away!

Mauricio Pochettino has revealed a lot on his tour down under, he has told us who has no future at Tottenham, thrown a smokescreen over Njie, the old slight injury story about a player who is leaving, and he has let us know he trusts the youngsters and his squad so there is no need to sign another centre-back.

Cameron Carter-Vickers turned in a very solid performance against Fernando Torres with Anton Walkes beside him. He played against Juventus in an inexperienced back four with only Trippier and Vorm behind to assist. That means taking responsibility, you haven't got someone beside you guiding you through the game, you sink or swim by your own decisions. After a torrid and nervous start he settled and improved. If cameo roles are needed and when cup games come around then he can step up to the plate. This season will be one to blood, to have him around the first team and get used to everything about match day for a greater part next season.

Coming back to this season and the opener against Everton, Pochettino also revealed that Jan Vertonghen is ahead of schedule.

"Jan is back in London and training well now, he's very close to coming back."

Kevin Wimmer is a dependable deputy so there will be no mad rush to ensure he can take the field. There is a couple of weeks to go yet and he might need longer to get his fitness levels to where they need to be. It is never the less encouraging to hear of his speedy recovery. The injury also means he has been able to have a good rest from football while the injury was in the initial stages which will help recharge his batteries after the European Championships this summer.

There is a report from La Gazzetta dello Sport that Roma not only are considering Federico Fazio as an alternative to Nacho, whose transfer from Real Madrid is looking less likely but Jan Vertonghen as well. Well a club can dream I suppose.
