Messi given 21 month jail term

Lionel Messi has been found guilty of tax fraud and given a 21-month jail sentence. His father, Jorge Messi, was given a 21-month jail term for defrauding the Spain Tax Office ( Hacienda) to the tune of €4.1m (£3.2m; $4.6m) between 2007 and 2009.

Prosecutors said that tax havens like Belize and Uruguay were used to conceal earnings from the Barcelona stars image rights.

The Fawlty Towers Manuel defence "I know nothing" didn't work. He and his father will serve their time on probationary terms. Barcelona are standing by the 29-year-old as you would expect, he is to great an asset for anything else.

"The club, in agreement with the Government prosecution service, considers that the player is in no way criminally responsible with regards to the facts underlined in this case.
"FC Barcelona continues to be at the disposal of Lionel Messi and his family to support him in whatever action he decides to take in defence of his honesty and his legal interests."
