Witsel is proving popular

TRANSFER TALK

Napoli hope to seal a deal with Porto for Hector Herrera next week. Clubs have back-up plans and thus Napoli are monitoring the situation of 27-year-old (28 next January) Belgian international midfielder Axel Witsel.

Witsel is also being tracked by Juventus, Inter, Roma, Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, Everton and Stoke City. Tottenham have been linked with the central midfielder previously and he has expressed a desire to move to wither Serie A or the Premier League.

The former Standard Liège and Benfica midfielder is currently with Russian club FC Zenit Saint Petersburg whom he joined on 3 September 2012. He has a contract with them until June 2017 and they would like to keep him. Xenit have suggested massive amounts in previous windows but he should cost in the region of £18.69-million (€23m - AUS$34.2m - US$25.57m).

His wage demands are said to be €3.5 to €4-million annually which equates to around £62,500-a-week. The UK press say Everton are leading the race (why someone has to be leading I don't know) the Italians say their clubs are, just depends which report you read and which one you want to believe.

He will want Champions League football of course so that rules out Inter, Everton and Stoke City, Chelsea would remain a prospect because of their financial power. Napoli, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund have Champions League football, Roma are in the play-off round. You would expect him to go to one of those four clubs should they want him, he certainly won't rush to sign for a club without Champions League, he'll want to keep his options open.
