German newspaper Bild have reported that former Holland captain, Tottenham Hotspur, Ajax, Real Madrid and Hamburger SV midfielder Rafael van der Vaart is a wanted man in Budapest.

They describe the 33-year-old (34 in February) as a dribbling playmaker and report that Hungarian champions Ferencvaros want to sign him. They quote the coach of Ferencvaros Thomas Doll who spoke to Bild.

"I would imagine Rafael van der Vaart very good at Ferencvaros. It could be a real success story.
"All these statements that Rafa was not too slow or conditionally at the height, are complete nonsense. I was very upset, as was most recently dealt with.

Van der Vaart only started seven league games amid speculation that he wasn't fit enough for the Spanish league.

Doll who led Ferencvaros to the double this season also told SPORT1 he wanted him but didn't know whether it was possible.

A contact exists and interest as well. Whether it's feasible, I can not say."

The stumbling block is his salary which is £920,000 (€1.2m - US$1.34m - AUS$1.85m) which is £17,692-a-week (€23,119 - US$25,811 - AUS$25,799). A far cry from his days with us. From Spain, National Sports Online report that Doll has spoken to van der Vaart and that is the salary he was asking or at least that it not be reduced significantly.

At £17,000-a-week he could help teach our youngsters a thing or two and a few cameo roles. He might be able to help is keep a lead. If we are going to have one really experienced player in the squad we could do worse.

He may not be able to handle the training but I'm sure he could handle 15 minute cameos.
