Gus Poyet appointed coach at real Betis

Former Tottenham player and coach Gustavo Poyet has been installed as the new manager of Spanish side Real Betis.

He was our assistant head coach under Juande Ramos.  Wikipedia tells us:

On 29 October 2007, Poyet rejoined his former club Tottenham Hotspur to work alongside new head coach Juande Ramos as a first team coach with Marcos Álvarez as a fitness coach. During his first season as assistant manager at White Hart Lane, he won the 2007–08 League Cup, beating Chelsea 2–1 after extra time in the Final after a penalty from Dimitar Berbatov in normal time and a header early into extra time from Jonathan Woodgate.
On 25 October 2008, Poyet parted company with Tottenham Hotspur along with manager Juande Ramos, first team coach Marcos Álvarez and sporting director Damien Comolli.

Playing at the 52,500 Benito Villamarin they sit comfortably in 14th place with one game to go so Poyet will be returning to La Liga where he played for Real Zaragoza.

“When they called me about the Betis job it was a simple decision. It’s a pleasure to be here and I’ll give my all for this club. From here on in I will prove myself with hard work and results, not words.
“The fans here deserve everything we can give them. They want a competitive team and that’s what we are going to give them.
“I want a side that respects the ball, one that controls games and has character, and the more we have of the ball the more we will enjoy ourselves.
“From now on we must start planning, start working, and prove ourselves out there on the pitch.”
