West Ham pace dictating Spurs selection

In my travels around the web, I came across an Everton website with an analysis of ourselves which made a few points worth mentioning here. Here is a link to the article: Scouting Report: Tottenham

Against Watford Trippier produced Spurs’ first assist away from home from an open play cross into the box.

Spurs concede most of their chances from wide crosses into the box but have yet to concede one away from home in open play.

Now I haven't checked that these facts are still accurate, the article these were taken from was written in January, but it does highlight defending and how important it is for the wide players to track back. They have to work hard for the team defensively, which does, of course, affect attacking ability.

If you remember the last game against Swansea they created superb opportunities from crosses from our left, but Lloris was equal to the task. While the full-backs job is to overlap and attack, away from home they have to be perhaps more mindful of defence.

West Ham had added speed to their attack out wide this season so team selection will take account of this and the two wide players perceived to be able to handle this better will be selected. Christian Eriksen has upped his game defensively this season, you see him rushing across to cover when teams switch play from one side to the other, Son is very energetic as is Erik Lamela. Nacer Chadli is the one some Spurs fans have reservations about defensively.

If Dele Alli is fit then it is a choice of two from three, if Alli is rested then Eriksen, Son and Lamela play. having said that Arsenal is at the weekend and we will want to keep some players as fresh as possible, that will mean 60-minute substitutions so you would expect Chadli to play the last 20 or 30 minutes.

Presumably, Trippier and Davies will play leaving Walker and Rose fresh for Arsenal. The rotation of the full-backs shows how much of a squad game it is now and how it is no longer a first eleven and a second eleven. Trippier and Davies are essential members of the group and mentally they don't feel they are on the outside waiting for a chance. They know they will play regularly and in important games. When you are going for the title every game is an important game, but a valued player plays better and both undoubtedly feel valued.

Perhaps this is why we have seen an improvement in Tom Carroll this season, perhaps mentally he is feeling more accepted, his performances have certainly grown, there are fewer mistakes now, although at times still too many.

Tonight can't come soon enough to get our next Tottenham fix.
