Barcelona president worried wealth of Premier League
Wealthy Spanish giants Barcelona, who have a TV deal heavily weighted in their favour in La Liga, are concerned about the financial strength of the Premier League. There is a bumper TV deal on its way which will make every English Premier League club wealthy. The rest of Europe do not like it and are worried they will struggle to compete.
Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu spoke to the BBC over his fears.
"The 20 teams in the Premier League are more than £5.136 billion ($ 7.21 billion) for live domestic broadcasts in a three-year contract from next season.
"The Premier League teams will have an unbelievable financial situation ... and we are concerned. The Premier League is the best competition in football. It has the greatest interest in fans and revenue.
"You do good things and keep the teams in the competition, where everyone is equal, it is a league that is of interest to everyone.
"We have different budgets in Spain and would be difficult for someone to be like Leicester the leader of the Premier League.
He feels that La Liga needs to be more even, yet Real Madrid and Barcelona take the lion's share of all TV money so quite how he proposes to achieve hat while working against it by not sharing the TV money more evenly, is a mystery.
He was more concerned with the best talent in Spain could be lured by the new wealth on offer to England, but said for Barca players there is more attraction than just money.
"Our opponents in the Premier League, they are great opponents. We must do everything possible to improve our sales and financial situation to make the talent of our team stay with us.
"That's why I'm so worried and we are working on it. We want to keep our talent at home. I know that our players are in contact with other clubs, it is normal. None of our players have said they want to leave.
"Most get better financial offers, but our players are not in Barcelona for money, they are there because of the football and the commitment of the fans."
Barca and Real head the Football Rich List, but Bartomeu said his goal was to achieve one billion euros (£1.10 billion) annual sales. He wants to develop the Barcelona brand to increase revenue. Football is all about money now, you need it to compete regularly at the top.
Real Madrid topped Deloitte Football Money League. cSales increased for the year 2015 to £577 million, followed by Barcelona (£560) and Manchester United (£520) in the third.
