The counter argument, Spurs 2nd, Chelsea 18th

Having looked at passing into the box, there is one further crucial element to look at, the most crucial element of all, the number of passes that create chances.

Playing the ball into the box is all well and good but end result is what counts so the greater the percentage of successful passes that create a shot the better. Tottenham fare better here than just the passing statistics in which we lag behind.

First we'll take a look at the chances created by passes into the box for and against and then we'll look at the number of chances created by passes into the box as a percentage figure.

Chances created by passes into the box For vs Against

  • Arsenal 97 vs 39 = 58
  • Liverpool 73 vs 33 = 40
  • Manchester City 67 vs 37 = 30
  • Tottenham Hotspur 61 vs 33 = 28
  • Chelsea 52 vs 35 = 17
  • Everton 54 vs 42 = 12
  • Manchester United 49 vs 37 = 12
  • Southampton 50 vs 44 = 6
  • League Average 46.7 vs 46.7 = 0
  • Bournemouth 41 vs 44 = -3
  • Swansea City 36 vs 41 = -5
  • Watford 35 vs 40 = -5
  • Sunderland 41 vs 53 = -12
  • Leicester City 48 vs 63 = -15
  • West Ham United 41 vs 60 = -19
  • Stoke City 35 vs 54 = -19
  • Newcastle United 33 vs 53 = -20
  • Crystal Palace 34 vs 55 = -21
  • Aston Villa 22 vs 53 = -21
  • WBA 33 vs 55 = -22
  • Norwich City 31 vs 62 = -31

A previous article showed Chelsea playing 488 passes into the box, of which 186 were successful, yet they have produced only 52 chances. Tottenham, you may recall, played 347 passes into the box, of which 91 were successful, yet we have created 61 chances from them.

You can deduce from that that although we are playing fewer passes into the box, they are more dangerous when we do. This would suggest we are being selective with the passes we play into the box and we don't just play them in there so the ball is in a danger area. The figures also show that defensively we are second behind Liverpool for preventing chances being created.

If we retained the quality of ball into the box but played more of them we would clearly raise our success level consequently if we prevented more passes into our box we would improve defensively also.

One argument says Eriksen, Alli, Lamela and Dembele could do better and the other suggest they are more dangerous than others through greater selectivity.

The top four teams in the Premier League are the four teams who have created the highest percentage of chances from passes into the box. naturally you need finishing of a good standard to take advantage of this, Newcastle United, for instance, create chances but simply don't take enough, often enough.
