Has Vertonghen's season finished?

Crystal Palace striker Conner Wickham has quite rightly been charged by the FA after his elbow into the face of Jan Vertonghen was caught by the TV cameras.

That elbow causes Jan Vertonghen to go down and in doing so he looked as if he pulled the ligaments in his knee. He is undergoing a scan today to assess the extent of the problem.

There are four main ligaments in the knee that can become injured. During injury, a knee ligament may be stretched (sprained), or sometimes torn (ruptured). Ligament rupture can be partial (just some of the fibres that make up the ligament are torn) or complete (the ligament is torn through completely). Knee ligament injuries can cause pain, swelling, tenderness, bruising and reduced movement of your knee. Your knee joint may feel unstable and you may walk with a limp. Treatment of a knee ligament injury can depend on a number of things including which ligament is injured and how sporty and active you are.

You can read the full patient info with diagrams at the link.

He looked as though he may have picked up either a Medial collateral or Lateral collateral ligament injury reading through the site. If that is the case the bad news is that he could be out for 3 months.

That would take him until the 24 April and the season ends in just three games time, those games being against Chelsea, Southampton and Newcastle. The last Premier League fixture is 15 May.

He would have to get back to fitness and then he would have to replace presumably Austrian Kevin Wimmer. We await news.

Conner has been charged with violent conduct and faces a three-game ban, the penalty to Tottenham could be far greater.

  1. Really hope not, our defence is so vital And we don't know how up for it wimmer is yet. The verts and alderweirald partnership is the catalyst. Then again to be honest if I had to pick him or Toby I would pick Toby every time so I hopefully Toby stays fit.
