Alderweireld and Wimmer - into the unknown

I read a piece in The National about Toby Alderweireld and not getting his shorts dirty because he could read the game so well. That prompted immediate thoughts of Scotty parker who dived around left right and centre blocking anything that moved and jolly good at it he was too.

There is a time and a place for everything, Eric Dier has a little Scotty Parker in him at times diving into tackles. If you go to ground to block a shot, the attacker only has to feign that he is shooting and drag the ball the other way and you are out of the game. That is fine if you are delaying him with cover around you or indeed if you do need to block a shot. There are times when you must stay on your feet and jockey your opponent into the area you want him to go, sideways or preferably backwards.

This season in the Premier League, Toby Alderweireld has now committed just 8 fouls in 23 games - one every 259 minutes. If you look at Danny Rose he seems to give away needless free-kicks on a regular basis around the box whereas Kyle Walker seems to have reduced the number he gives away on the touchline.

It is perhaps one area that Rose could look at to improve his game and reduce the danger level on ourselves.

Alderweireld will now have to get used to a new partner having played every minute of the Premier League season alongside Jan Vertonghen until his injury. Presumably, that will be Kevin Wimmer. The Norwich City game may tell us more about the 23-year-old Austrian. Wimmer has had to bide his time but now opportunity knocks.

What will happen to Federico Fazio, will he still be sold, will this mean Sevilla have to up their offer instead of waiting for us to lower our price for a player we don't want? Spurs made it clear Wimmer wasn't going anywhere this window despite the Schalke chairman, Clemens Toennies, trying to use the media to put pressure on us, claiming they were talking.

Very happy to have made my Premier League debut today, what a great performance as well from the whole team! 🙏

"We have a big squad and everyone is ready when they are called on. We have a great spirit."

Time to show that to be the case. How he gels with Alderweireld will have a big bearing on the rest of our season and, to be honest, we don't yet know how well he reads a game, the key to the art of defending.
