The key Pochettino moment + Full Game VIDEO link

I hope you all had a good festive season. I spent Boxing Day with the family so avoided the football results and watched the whole game in the evening from this link. The commentary was not in English so I turned the sound off and watched, as I do when analysing a game, with no sound. That way you don't get distracted by the commentator telling us his opinion, which is often wrong, they don't seem to have a clue how full-backs operate in the modern game for instance.

A couple of things struck me, one being what a stupid booking Eric Dier picked up, there was no need for that challenge in their half at all and the old bugbear of clinical finishing when 2-0 up to train ourselves to be clinical at other time, like against Newcastle or WBA when we dropped points. To have a four on one chance and blow it because a highly paid professional footballer can only use one foot is nothing short of pathetic. Once again some of Lloris's kicking was sub-standard, he needs to continue to work on his distribution.

The thing that really caught my eye though was the substitution of Tom Carroll before he came onto the pitch after 80 minutes. Pochettino didn't just make a substitution, he had a hand on his shoulder and was shaking him, he was geeing him up to go out there and make an impact. In previous game he has not really made his mark in the way players must, after being geed up him in the advanced role I prefer him in, he promptly controlled a brisk pass beautifully and struck a sweet curling left foot shot that the keeper got nowhere near.

"This is what we want when players come on from the bench. Tom made a real impact for the team and we are very pleased for him. He deserves this moment because he works hard in training. He deserved to play today."

I wonder if Tom Carroll was running out of time and whether that has now given him something to build upon. Now Pochettino can go to him and tell him that was exactly the impact he wants to see him have on games. I have always felt there is a bit of a mental block with Carroll, happy to be part of the group but not one to take the limelight. To force your way into this side, you have to be prepared to take the limelight as you are expected to consistently make your mark.

I will be very interested in his next appearance to see if this one has had a positive effect.
