Monaco result matters

Everyone seems to have forgotten that the Monaco match is important, they seem to assume that as we have qualified we can just send out a weak team because the result doesn't matter.

They are of course wrong, the result does matter. It is important that we top the group and get an easier draw in the next round. The group winners are seeded along with the best four third-placed group round losers from the UEFA Champions League. One of those sides may well be Manchester United who finished third in their group on eight points.

We will know more after tonight when the other remaining losers are rewarded with a second chance. Shakhtar Donetsk, Galatasaray and Sevilla, who have won the last two Europa Leagues) may well be in the section group winners could meet.

Tottenham need to secure at least a point against Monaco so a decision has to be made whether to secure the result then rest players or rest players and trust the backup players to secure a point or more. There is no right or wrong answer before the game, although we can make a decision in hindsight.

There will be debate around Josh Onomah. For me he shouldn't start, but should once again come on as a substitute in the second half. He is young and learning, at the moment he is being exposed to first-team football in small doses. There is Harry Winks to bring along, a decision to be made whether we are keeping Tom Carroll or not and therefore whether he plays.

Do we want to risk an injury to Andros Townsend, given we are hawking him around clubs to try and find a buyer? Should one of or both Alderweireld and Vertonghen be rested for Wimmer and Fazio?

Do we trust Njie up front, we have to at some stage, he is getting plenty of substitute appearances when defences are tiring, should we see what he can do from the start. Who is going to play at the weekend, Eriksen and Lamela? Should we, therefore, pick Heung-min Song or is he going to start at the weekend at the expense of one of the others?

Would an Eriksen, Son, Lamela trio give us more goal threat in the Premier League and we play Dembele Thursday? Improved as he is Dembele must become more of a goal threat in the way Dele Alli is.

Pochettino has picked strong teams so far, will he continue to do so? There are many questions, many permutations.
