Tottenham want Marcelo

Real Madrid left-back has been told he can leave and will not be getting a new deal report Spanish daily AS. He has been discussing a move with his agents and Tottenham are thought to be interested in signing him.

Tottenham want Marcelo

Last summer Spurs tried to sign Fàbio Coentrao who was not getting game time but he couldn't be convinced to join us. The 26 year-old Brazil defender Marcelo, who can also play left wing, injured himself this winter and lost his place to Coentrao, now it looks like the Portuguese defender who is going to stay.

It's reported that some fans are not happy with his attitude now he is not first choice, questions were asked about his professionalism and there were suggestions he was overweight. He hasn't been producing the performances looking disinterested when Real Madrid don't have the ball. He admits he doesn't like not playing.

“I’m OK, I’m available to help them team. I always want to play, whether it’s a friendly match or official. When I don’t, it’s normal that I’m bored and sad, but that’s up to the boss.

“Competing with Coentrao is good for Madrid. In Madrid, things for me have never been easy. He is a fantastic player and we are both fighting to play, but I always want to play.”

He is a talented player and is currently a part of Brazil's team for the World Cup, he would certainly bring quality to Tottenham were we able to secure his signature.

Chelsea and Juventus are watching the situation of a player who is valued around £22 million but with only 1 year left on his contract would be available for less than that, though whether he would be as cheap as the figure in some reports, £4.79 million (€9m), would be highly questionable.

"It’s been a difficult season for me. Only I know what I went through to play that game and it was a sacrifice.

“Playing in the final [Champions League] and scoring was a relief and a feeling of accomplishment. I had a lot of help in my family and in the sacrifice.”

“Are Real Madrid stronger than the national team? One is a club the other is a national team. It’s completely different.

“Do you think the Brazil lack stars? Is that your question? I think it’s low. You just have to look at our national team, the players that are here. Also those that aren’t on the list.”

“Spain are currently the best in the world. Although I didn’t see any changes after Brazil beat Spain in the Confederations Cup. Before they had a lot of respect for Brazil, and they still do.

“My place on this team [Brazil] isn’t secured.  That would be disrespectful to Maxwell. We are in the same boat, we’re both fighting for a spot.”

Franco Baldini is at the World Cup in Brazil and is watching players whils meeting his counterparts from other clubs. Marcelo has played in both Brazil games so far and if he can be obtained relatively cheaply for his ability then he would be one to snap up.

Very comfortable on the ball he could play anywhere down the left side and would undoubtedly add something to the Spurs team.

Last season for Real Madrid in La Liga he made 28 appearances, scored 1 goal and made 44 chances. His pass accuracy was 85%, average pass length 16m and won 53% of his duels. He made 4 defensive actions with 0 defensive errors. He picked up 3 yellow and no red cards.

In all competitions he scored 2 goals with 7 assists and 5 yellow cards. He had 32 shots. He made 1,655 passes completing 1,408 of them. In the air he won 20 of his 31 duels.

Aerial ability is not his strength but he makes up for that on the floor. His dribbling, passing and crossing are all strong elements of his game and he likes to attack as full-backs have to in the modern game.
