We have had a look at one World Cup managerial possibility to take charge at Tottenham after the tournament in Brazil this summer in German manager Joachim Löw so lets extend the net and look at another possibility.

World Cup Candidate Number 2:
Carlos Queiroz (Iran) Age 61 - contract until end of 2014 World Cup

Carlos Manuel Brito Leal Queiroz is known to English fans as assistant manager to Sir Alex Ferguson in 2002 and again from 2004 until 2008.

Queiroz wants Tottenham job

Prior to joining Manchester United he had previously managed South Africa, United Arab Emirates and Portugal as well as club sides. In 2003 he left Old Trafford to take up the reigns at Real Madrid.

He returned to depart again 4 years later to manage Portugal for a second time.
His 2 year spell there then saw him manage Iran who he has now taken to the World Cup.

During his second spell at Old Trafford Roy Keane gave an interview to MUTV which has not been aired in which he directly attacked Queiroz whose tactics he didn't like and whom he felt was given far too much power. In 2005 Roy Keane left Old Trafford. On the other side of the coin Cristiano Ronaldo turned himself into the second best player in the world during this period.

Queiroz introduced revolutionary training methods to the United team and was the man responsible for turning them into a formidable defensive unit. Manchester and England right-back Gary Neville recalled one of these training sessions in a Guardian article:

"Queiroz's daily routine before the Champions League semifinal against Barcelona in 2008 was to put sit-up mats on the training pitch to mark exactly where he wanted the defenders to be to the nearest yard.

"We'd never seen such attention to detail. We rehearsed time and again, walking through the tactics slowly with the ball in our hands.

"United went through over two legs, with Barcelona not scoring in either."

During his second spell Benfica approached him twice to take over and to fend them off Sir Alex Ferguson pushed for him to become the next Manchester United manager. He will no doubt be in the running for the post again. It would help Spurs if they did appoint someone who knows the club as it would free up Louis Van Gaal again.

The Queiroz brand of football is counter-attacking, he first builds a reliable defence with attention to minute detail as Neville shows and then expands to attack sides quickly on the counter-attack. His time as Portugal boss however saw a talented side unable to score goals.

At Old Trafford he used a mobile 4-2-4 formation depending is United had the ball or not. In tough games the formation changed to 4-5-1 and in Europe nearer to a 4-3-3 approach. While Sir Alex was a master tactician it is Queiroz who helped devise the tactics and then implement them on the training ground.

Players who have the quality can adapt to different systems quickly but as you move away from the top clubs that becomes more difficult. I have been talking in the Spurs Need To Go Mental series about the mental changes Tottenham need to make, signing players with the mental ability to handle changing formations is a part of the recruitment process.

Following the departure of Andre Villas-Boas he was interviewed by the BBC World Service and asked if he would like the Tottenham job.

"Absolutely.

"Tottenham is a club I really appreciate a lot and I have great admiration.

"One of my coaching dreams is to get back to English football. I was very happy in Manchester. It was the most happy and outstanding football period of my entire career."

He also revealed he has had "some private connections in the past" with Daniel Levy, although what they were is unknown.
