If you're a fit defender, pop along to Spurs will you!

It was only yesterday I wrote a post about Spurs needing no more injuries with Kyle Walker not being fit enough for Wednesday's international against Denmark and news that Christian Eriksen would miss the game with a bad back.

What is it with bad backs? Christian Eriksen, Vlad Chiriches and Erik Lamela, three is a bit of a coincidence. Eriksen is hopeful for Chelsea, Walker is expected to be fit as is Younes Kaboul and Lamela resumes light training in a few days.

News today however that Zeki Fryers has now withdrawn from the England Under 21 squad with an ankle injury. He was the subject of a very late and hefty challenge from behind in the first half but it's not clear when he sustained the injury. With Danny Rose also injured Spurs could do without more defenders on the sidelines.

Currently Younes Kaboul, Vlad Chiriches, Kyle Walker, Danny Rose and Zeki Fryers make the resources in defence look stretched. Danny Rose is reportedly out for another three games so it's fingers crossed the withdrawing of Fryers is a precaution, although there is of course Kyle Naughton who can deputise at left-back if Walker returns.

Assuming Walker and Kaboul are both fit, do both start and does Tim Sherwood move Vertonghen to left-back, where he won't be happy playing. A few conundrums for Sherwood to solve before Saturday.

The bright light for Spurs is the weight off Soldado's back which I wrote about yesterday. Roberto has sent a message to the loyal fans who supported him through his nightmare.

"I’m speechless. The reaction really meant a lot to me. The fans were unbelievable all the way through and my team-mates as well. They’ve really supported me throughout this period. I’m feeling really good."

Jan Vertonghen added his voice to that of Tim Sherwood and Michael Dawson who spoke after the match yesterday.

“Roberto has had some bad luck and that’s why we were all happy for him.

“We know he is doing a lot of work for us. He needed the goal. It keeps the pressure off him.”

Vertonghen also confirmed that it is not Liverpool who may be caught for fourth:

"It is not just Liverpool we are chasing; I think there are other teams who can drop down. We are just watching fourth place - it does not matter who we catch."

That will need at least a draw at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
