Defoe; "I just love Spurs"

Jermain Defoe has become Harry Redknapp's first signing as Tottenham Hotspur manager and has spoken at his delight in rejoining Spurs.

"Tottenham are and have always been in my heart. I've always been close with the fans here and want to repay their appreciation in me."

Unfortunately, Jermain arrived a little too late to be registered to play in tonight's Carling Cup semi-final against Burnley, but should make the team-sheet against Wigan on Sunday, given that he passes his medical.

We wish Jermain Defoe the best of luck and know that he will score a hat load of goals for us.

What does this mean for the futures of Darren Bent or Roman Pavlyuchenko? Defoe is sure to be the first-choice striker at the club, meaning that Harry will partner him with either two of the above mentioned strikers, or not, if we are to play the 4-5-1 formation with Modric in behind Defoe.

I feel that Bent will be sacrificed as Everton are known to be in for a striker and have made enquires about Darren in the past. Everton though, have no money, and so Newcastle could be in for him. Maybe we could swap Bent for Owen?

  1. If Bent left there would only be two strikers owned by Spurs, at the club. We would be in exactly the saem position as we were before Defoe arrived. Bent will not be sold, at least not till the summer. Bring on Defoe!
  2. How can you swap Bent for Owen? Considering Owen will be injured 90% of a season and be paid a large salary! If Owen were not English, no club will touch him with a pole vault!

  4. To whoever made the first comment, we have 3 owned strikers if bent left, pavs, defoe and giovanni, and we'd have campbell til the end of the season. U really think man united will want frazier campbell back when they already have 4 top class strikers?

  6. I always thought Defoe was a let down 1st time, and he lost the battle with Keane after having plenty of chances to be no.1 but he wasn't good enough especially away from home, where little boy lost springs to mind.
    This whole thing to me is insane, and typical Spurs. We should be looking forward, not back.
    Expect Defoe on the bench in 2 years and we'll sell him again for less than we paid. Ridiculous situation IMO.

  8. I think after signing Defoe we have 3 strikers that we can accommodate over the course of a season in different tactics and formations. Maybe out of these 3 Bent will get lewss exposure than Defoe and Pavlu but then again: Goals matter. Above everything signing Defoe means Harry believes Modric can be a proper midfielder in a 4-4-2 system. I like this.

    What else do we need. Maybe a proper central defender given that King play 50% Woodgate has back spasms here and there and Dawson is the only one we know can play all the time. Distin may be available. Portsmout got him on a free transfer and obviously need the money. He is not young but maybe something we would need right now. Other option would be Hyypiä from Liverpool. He still has one or two seasons left in him. A bargain buy for sure.

  12. DEFOE IS NOT CUP TIED FOR UEFA. IF THE TEAM THE PLAYER PLAYS FOR DOES NOT MAKE IT TO THE NEXT STAGE OF THE UEFA CUP THEN HE IS ELIGIBLE. IF PAV'S PREVIOIUS CLUB DID NOT QUALIFY THEN HE WOULD BE ELIGIBLE.
    ROCHA WAS ON INELIGIBLE WHEN WE SIGNED HIM BECAUSE BENFICA DROPPED DOWN FROKM THE CL.

I agree PoshSpur - get in Heskey or someone like him, all of our strikers now can only play on the deck and I just think back to the 0-0 with Man U before Christmas and Pav didnt win a single header against Vedic and Ferdinand. We need someone who can knock it on, hold it up, bring others into play and make a nuisance of themselves someone like Drogba would be ideal but we have to settle for Heskey then lets do it.

  16. We must sell Bent because he is a sh*t. Campbell will go out in the end of season and we must have one of sub striker - Babel is the best choice.

    I love players who want to play for Spurs. Defoe is a definate, as it Bentley. Are there any others? I don't think so. I thought Robbie was, that was like being cheated on by the missus...

    Subsequent registration
    17.17 For all matches from the start of the round of 32, a club may register a
    maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the
    current competition. Such registration must be completed by 1 February
    2009 at the latest. This deadline cannot be extended.
    17.18 One player from the above quota of three who has played UEFA club
    competition matches for another competing club in the current season may
    exceptionally be registered provided that the player has not been fielded:
    − in the same competition for another club,
    − for another club that is currently in the same competition.
    Furthermore, if the player’s new club is playing in the UEFA Cup, his former
    club must not have played in the UEFA Cup at any point in the current
    season.
