Spurs vs Boca Analysis

Spurs 2 – 2 Boca Juniors


With this being the opening game in our group, my opinion is that we did ok, but lacked that extra something.

I won’t go into the match details as you can read what happened on other sites. What I will say though, is that we either desperately need a left winger or an attacking midfielder, not both.

Reid just isn’t cut out to be a winger. He’s more like a Beckham, but unfortunately not as good. I am not saying that he won’t get better. I am saying that in my opinion, he will never have the ability to take on players on the outside with pace and skill and then cross a ball in from the touchline. He will however, cross from deep and come into the centre every now and then.

The one big drawback that I spotted was that Defoe and Mido continually had to go out into the wide left position in order to pick up the ball.

My opinion is that you either have two out-and-out wingers (in the Routledge criteria), or have an attacking midfielder (Rosicky criteria) and only one right/left winger, with the other flank area occupied by someone like Reid.

If we are to have two out-and-out wingers and an attacking midfielder, we will suffer in the defensive department, as it will be very hard for attack minded players to track back and defend.

The other sore point for me was Keane. His attitude stinks. If a pass to him went slightly astray, he would go bananas. I am sure that he knows he won’t be around much longer.

The good points for me were Defoe and Mido. They really did play well together. Mido is looking better and better with each game, and Defoe is beginning to look world class. Both strikers took their goals superbly.

Routledge was another plus. He will be an outstanding player for us, not just this season, but for many years to come. If he is to become truly great, then he'll need to work on his strength.

I will finally add that the commentary on EuroSport (EU) was terrible. The guy had absolutely no idea. Saying that Jol joined us in November was funny, but then stating that Boca were Brazilians was bloody hilarious!

These are my opinions on the current game play and setup. What are yours?

  1. It's only our 2nd game! Boca are far ahead of us in terms of fitness and we played well.Don't judge anything on pre-season and hope that everybody is 100% when the season begins.

  4. Keane is one of our ebst players are we should offer him the contract he deserves. When played with Kanoute he has a far better strike rate than Defoe. Defoe has only scored 2 league goals since February.

IMO considering the humidity, time difference, its only our 2nd pre-season game & Boca were fully match fit, I think our boys made a pretty good account of themselves & no-one had a poor game, except Reid (altho hes still young, time on his side etc). After the 1st shaky 10-15, they did pretty good. Esp liked Defoe, Mido, Tainio, Cerny. I 4 1 am optimistic & can't wait 4 the season to start. COYS
  6. Tainio did well IMHO. Good touch, some telling passes and rarely lost possession.
  7. The norwegian commentator on Eurosport was also horrible. Not only did he claim Marney was bleeding from his nose (it was Dawson), he poorly commented all substitutions; "El Hamda....something comes in..."(forgets to mention who went out) and so on. He also failed to identify just about all of the boca players until a closeup showed name on shirt. And he said Marney scored two goals last season, so that shows he goes up a lot from his back position on corners and free kicks.

    Good commentators are a rare kind, obviously.
  8. After that performance by reid, who incidentaly hasn't lost weight, I'm not surprised why the Club were after Downing. However, I don't think we are going to buy anyone this window, it's just the same old hipe being linked with high profile players which you just know isn't going to happen. Come Spurs make me eat my words!
  9. Tainio is a centre mid (who can play off the strikers or wide left & Right) he played in all of these positions today.
    but with with Mendes and the Luxury that is the lazy bastard Carrick in the centre and Sean Davis and Brownie he may not play there? El Hamdoui looked good, and Mido (not Midu?) looked like he'd lost a bit of Timber, still got Zeigler to come in on the left, so reid will be on the bench (eating pies :) )

    encouraging against a team that have just ended their season, and are still at peak fitness. it will be interesting to see the team on monday, as it will probably be all change
  10. thought we played well against excellent opposition,kept the ball well and played some lovely football at times,midos goal was class,as was defoes.taino looked hungry and i would have loved to see ziegler have a go down the left...routledge looks a great buy..and i beleive huddlestone will play best in the centre,calm assured good tackler and distributor,if we cant get a ROSICKY etc then save the money and let these lads have a crack learn eachothers play and as for keaneo get of his back his quality and WE NEED QUALITY...come on you spurs
  11. The match seemed ok to me - for a first proper pre-season against a different kind of team and in a hot humid climate.

    I agree that we need to sign two or three experienced players. For me though they would be one proper left winger, one centre forward to replace Keane and a centre back. I think we are well stocked with quality in the centre of the park but I worry about relying on Dawson, Davenport and Huddlestone at CB because they are so inexperienced; I worry about Gardner because he is so inconsistent; and about Naybet because he is so old now. That Dutch guy who played against England and Jol kept calling 'my boy' would be good.

    I think we will still sign people beacuse Levy seems to do a lot of business just before the close of the window.
  12. im just concerned that we may have to many players, we need to trim our squad and start to weed out the average players without lowering there transfer value, jol has to get a settled 11 players and only change things when he judges each players form rather than changing the team for the sake of it.
    i thought defoe done well, with mido but there is still no one to link our midfeild and attack ,no cutting edge, thought routledge looked sharp skillfull and lightning quick but needs to build up his upper body strenth, the major problem we have is top top players dont see us an option because of uefa cl format of 4 clubs going in, the same 4 clubs seem to get all the money then finish higher up premier league table and qualify again year in year out so unless we pay silly money for someone and for there wages then we sadly wont be signing any top draw players,if we do pay someone silly money then all that happens will be levy and jol will get a knock on there door from agents of players th…
  13. found it intresting that we made two substitutions up front and neither was kanoute. Not saying it's 100% proof he's off but with the suppossed sniffing about of baptista by levy,can see Fredi being on his way. On the game itself, 2-2 was a good result but judging from reid's performance, would like to see lennon and routeledge on the flanks against sundowns.

  23. Tainio will be a star for us!! He seems to have loads of time and that spoon pass was class!!.. all in all and considering it was our second friendly,, i thought we look good!.. Mido and Defoe can make each other superstars,, it's like they're born to play with each other,,, but we seriously need to get rid of some players.. One striker,, two central midfielders and a million centerbacks,, and reid's got to start looking better,, you can tell he's a good footballer with a sweet left foot but always seems a bit off the pace!!

  27. I thought we looked slightly rusty but that is to be expected. Reid needs to believe in his own abilities. We have a wealth of central midfielders but is one of them going to take up the mantle of attacking midfielder? Routledge is going to put alot of smiles on the Lane`s faithful.
    Defoe is world class and Mido may turn out to be his best partner.
    I like Dawson and Huddlestone oozes class for such a young player. King is superb but we do lack one massive piece to the jigsaw...we need an all running, never defeated, ever inspiring CAPTAIN!

  37. To say Tanio was poor is ridiculous. Played out of psition and battled hard, chasing everything and interveening to help set up a goal.

    Other plus's were undoubtedly Routledge and Cerny and it is also nice to see Mido and Mendes getting in a good performance.

    The draw back was the back 4 for me as i am not too worried about reid as he will improve and we have Zeigler.

    I am certain that this will not be our back four but we do need our first choices to gel especially whoever is chosen to partner King.

    1 - Jol (now that Arnesen is buggering off), will have everything to do with transfers, accept the contract negotiations. How could you manage a team if you aren't choosing who you need?!

    2 - The Levy thing has already been said by someone elseso I won't go on - but it was a mixture of Pleat and Sugar who left a legacy of problems at the club, which in a couple of short years Levy looks to have turned around. Santini - world cup and european cup winning manager - Levy got him at Spurs, you can't knock that at all, it's not his fault that he turned out to be a cock!

  41. We played some nice football after we"d settled down,some great local support and the opposition were a good side.
    Our new signings did well and everyone worked hard for each other in hot conditions.
    Defoe looked different class and Mido teamed well with him,Carrick worked his nuts off as did Taino,Reid and Marney(not a right back)were dissapointing and Mendes for me didnt get forward enough.(maybe following orders??)
    Anyway a good start and bring on sundowners.

Just sit back and relax, a 2-2 draw against Boca was excellent especially if you remember how bad we were against teams like rangers. Start worrying or getting excited in a few weeks time.

  47. I dont think Jol selected the team with a "must win" in mind. He prolly needed to see how far marney has progressed or decide whether he's suited for right back. Edman could be nursing a minor injury and thus not being risked against a very fit team.

    Or strategically he felt it was best to crowd the midfield with non-wingers (this includes reid who's more LM than LW) so our shape will always be kept and we wont be easily caught by Boca's speedy counter attacks.

    Or he needs to see if we can attack from the middle...

    If anyone is blaming me for starting this conversation, I would like to point out that that is my job.....to start conversations and then get you lot to comment.

    Tainio did well. He's very competitive. Cerny did very well also.

    We have said for the past month here at THBN that the up-front partnership would be Mido & Defoe, and we are sticking by that. They will complement each others play, as they showed yesterday.

    I do believe that Daniel Levy IS the man that will guide us into the top 5 again.

    If we are to play only 1 winger (Routledge) and one flank-sided midfielder (Reid), then we will need an attacking midfielder (Rosicky).

    We believe the money we have at the moment (approx £18 million) will be used to buy 1 player. No more than £5 million will be spent on that player either.

    Here at THBN, we think that we won't be selling anyone but Keane, unless he signs a new contract.

If he is good enough for Nigeria I am sure he would have waited his time and hope to play for his own native country because Nigeria would have a lot more chances of appearing in the World Cup. So naturally, he'd be happy to take the money and play for Singapore.

    Owen is already paid handsomely by Real, what he needs now are winners medals. Especially a CL one. Spurs cant even promise a CL match in the future. My logic is, if I were a great player and a big Spurs fan, I'd want to play for Spurs at some stage of my career.

    I am afraid top quality players like Owen would have different priorities to think of.

  65. Personally, i don't think we overly need one (after seeing Tainio who is an attacking midfielder)...but i think we'll buy one .. so Rosicky or Guti,, if i was dreaming Aimar or Baptista..     I havent actually stopped drooling over his goals against Germany. His headers were bullet-like, Kahn had absolutely no chance.

    Bolton has a record of pretty good signings in the past, namely Okocha and Djorkaeff. They came in cheap but delivered the goods.

  73. Poshspur, I share your views regarding tactics. Assuming carrick is first choice who plays in cm with him? Davis, tainio, mendes or brown. My choice would be davis although tainio looked good in cm not a winger! I would look to get an out & out left winger in & a rosicky type player in. Brown would have to go. You would then have the option of playing rosicky & reid with reid squeezing in to provide cover. Or you have davis & two out & out wingers. I want to see reto at left back. I dont see the likes of mendes or tainio being anything other than bench warmers & they might even be gone after next year depending on how successful we are. some might not agree and some will say I should give tainio a chance.     SWP goes to Chelsea - which although some of you thought we had a chance of getting him, it could turn out to be good for Spurs! Where will he play at Chelsea? who will he replace...

    Robben? - almost certainly not.
    Duff? - NO
    This leaves Joe Cole looking a bit shakey in his position, He is now a full international, he will want and need to be playing first team football, I don't think Chelsea have spent £21m on a sub.

    Maybe we could take on another boy indirectly from our feeder club this time! Joe Cole and Carrick - not just good for Spurs - but England.

  79. I like Gera (w/brom) but Cole would be a great buy.
    Dont know why anyone would suggest Brown should go, he was one of our most consistant players last season.Reid,fat or not has gotta buck up or warm the bench, I aint seen nothing special from him since we signed him,looks average.
    All this about its only our second game etc etc..our players are young FFS they should have no probs with fitness.
  80. Gera is a fine player but we've already got Routledge and Lennon so let's not demotivate them. Unless we can be certain that Gera can operate as CM.

    A crowded out Joe Cole though, would be a good acquisition.
  81. Agree dan mac Joe Cole could be a real pssibility come January. He could play on left or if he did play in cm he would not have such a free role in our team. All in all he would be a great signing. Brown was great last season in his own right but I feel he would be the one to make way for a cole or rosicky to come in.

    Rosicky for me would be the number one player. He's fast, has superb vision, is two-footed, can score, and is a great passer of the ball, oh, and he's a box-2-box player.

    For all those who think that Tainio will be our attacking midfielder, you are very wrong.

    As one guy commented earlier, Teemu is a better version of Michael Brown. He's a battler, not a flair player.

    If Rosicky is out of the question, then I would go in for Gera. But as WBA are an English club, their valuation of him may not warrant a bid from us.

    Our strange friend in Singapore is correct about Mido. Are we going to put all our faith in a player that isn't even ours? We all (THBN) think he'll make the grade, so I hope Jol signs him in the Jan window.

    Sell Keane though. His attitude has been stinking since February. Unless a pass is given to him in the exact specifications that he desires, he goes off on one.

  83. I think we've got Mido on a non-recall contract. So he will be with us until the end of season. And there should possibly be an option to buy as well.
  84. My apollagies manicspur I thought it was poshspur that originaly posted. I also agree that keane should go. I thought that half way through last season. I am a big kanoute fan and dispite his lack of goals last season I think he was a key player. I think we could get away without replaceing keane for next season. I also think that mido will be top qality if he stays interested.

  87. Like many of you, I think we need a attacking midfielder and a really good one.Gera at about $5m pounds would be good business but WBA would not be tempted into a deal with us unless we offer ridiculous money.
    He looks exactly what we need... physical precence, proven EPL quality,goal scoring match winner , leadership quality and pace.I'm not too sure about about Rosicky and those guys with "mozart" like skills with no proven qualities at EPL.Are you going to trade Rosicky for 4mil or pay another additional 2mil for Gera ? If I'm going to bet, I go for the latter.
    Another area I think we need to strengthen is the forwards... strange as it may seen.We have individual qualities but the mix is just not correct...so are the personalities....Inconsistent Defoe, sulky Keane, lazy Kanoute and fat Mido.Can't help but feel there would be a late bid for Johnson or Ashton with one of the current 4 sold to make way.

  90. Joe cole has adapted, I have to disagree with the real angryman. His game, over the last season, progressed so much! the reason he is now starting for England, is because he has screwed his head on, he uses slightly less flair, but produces a much better end product. also a real hard worker. For all the talk of Rosicky coming to Spurs, I haven't seen one report anywhere genuinly linking him, can we please stop talking about him, think we all understand now that 'if' we were to get him it would be great for the club, but without us actually trying to sign him, it won't happen, so for now it's just getting boring!
